Is Fortune-Telling a Sin in Islam?

In Islam, fortune-telling, having one’s fortune told, and seeking information from fortune-tellers are strictly forbidden (haram).
This ruling is based on the Qur’an, authentic hadiths, and the consensus of Islamic scholars.

What Does the Qur’an Say About Fortune-Telling?

The Qur’an clearly states that only Allah knows the unseen (al-ghayb):
“Say: None in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allah.”
(Surah An-Naml 27:65)
Therefore, anyone who claims to know the unseen — including fortune-tellers and psychics — is speaking falsehood.

Hadiths About Fortune-Tellers and Soothsayers

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warned strongly against fortune-tellers:
“Whoever goes to a fortune-teller and believes what they say has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad.”
(Tirmidhi)
This hadith shows the severe spiritual danger of believing in fortune-tellers.

Why Is Fortune-Telling Considered a Sin?
Fortune-telling is forbidden in Islam because it:
  • Claims to know the unseen (which only Allah knows)
  • Weakens trust in Allah
  • Encourages superstition
  • Misleads people with false information
  • Can lead to shirk (associating partners with Allah)
For these reasons, Islam rejects all forms of fortune-telling.

All Types of Fortune-Telling Are Forbidden

The ruling applies to every type of fortune-telling, including:
  • Coffee cup reading
  • Tarot cards
  • Palm reading
  • Water or crystal reading
  • Mediumship
  • Astrology and horoscopes (when predicting the future)
All of them are considered haram and spiritually harmful.

Vedat Gülmez Hoca’s Perspective
Vedat Gülmez Hoca’s guidance is based entirely on the Qur’an and the Sunnah.

He rejects all forms of:
❌ fortune-telling
❌ mediumship
❌ tarot
❌ talismans
❌ spirit-calling
❌ sorcery

These practices are religiously prohibited and harmful.

For Vedat Hoca, true spiritual healing comes only through:
✔ the Qur’an
✔ dua (supplication)
✔ dhikr (remembrance of Allah)
✔ spiritual purification
Never through fortune-telling or forbidden methods.

Conclusion: Fortune-Telling Is a Sin and Spiritually Dangerous

Fortune-telling and believing in it:
  • is haram,
  • harms one’s faith,
  • weakens trust in Allah,
  • and misguides the heart.

A Muslim should seek guidance for the future from Allah alone, not from fortune-tellers.
